University digs deep

Members of the University community have been giving time and money generously in a number of recent charity events.

Over £250 was raised by cake bakes for Macmillan Cancer Relief. Sue Connor of the University Reception raised £143 by selling cakes and organising a raffle, which was won by Jane South from the Department of Economics. The Department of Electronic Systems Engineering raised a further £131.98 for the national charity.

Margaret Everett, from the University’s Post Office, undertook a 12 mile sponsored ride on her horse, Murphy raising over £100 for the Make a Wish Foundation. Make a Wish grants wishes to children, aged 3 to 18 years, with life threatening diseases.

Peter Simpson, Assistant Engineer in the Estates Management Section, encouraged colleagues to get involved in the Colchester Fire Swim.

Lynne Shelley, Purchasing and Contracting Supervisor, said: 'Four of us volunteered and then regretted it because we were given the 4am slot! Contractors and suppliers gave donations and we received a 14 inch remote controlled VW Beetle from Radio Spares. This was auctioned at the University for £36 so in total we raised over £2,000 for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund and other local charities. We must be mad as we have already booked for next year!'

In the Department of Computer Science, Kevan Wilding has been raising money to send a 24 strong group of 15 to 20 year olds, from Havering, to Kenya to build two residential centres with local young people. Previous visits have taken place but this is the largest trip planned, with fund raising events including table sales and quiz nights. This month Kevan has been involved in raffling a laptop computer, with many tickets sold at the University.

Kevan said: 'The University of Essex was one of the largest purchasers of tickets and it was nice to see Jessie Mallinson from Language and Linguistics win the laptop. This project is not just about doing work for the people of Kenya but about working with the people of Kenya to help build the centres.'
