Essex student makes Olympic team
Sports
Science undergraduate, Andy Turner, has been
selected to join the Great Britain Olympic squad.
Andy, a second year student on the University's Sports Bursary Scheme,
will travel to Athens this summer to compete against the world's best in
the 110m hurdles.
After winning the 60m hurdles at the BUSA (British Universities Sports
Association) Indoor Championships in February, Andy deferred his studies
to concentrate on training for the Olympics. Since then he has spent time
training in the United States with other Olympic hopefuls and competed in
a number of championships, including England's international match in
Szombathely, Hungary, where he recorded a lifetime best of 13.47 seconds.
A recent hamstring injury had threatened to scupper his Athenian dream
but Andy will be joining British stars such as Steve Backley, Darren
Campbell, and Paula Radcliffe, in the birthplace of the Olympics in
August.
Andy continues to receive support from the University and hopes to
return to his degree in September.
