Setting the tone at the Lakeside Theatre

The University’s autumn music programme continues with eclectic work at the Lakeside Theatre.

Following two jazz performers in October, November sees Empirical at the Lakeside at 8.30pm, 8 November. Last year their self-titled debut album won almost every jazz award going, including both MOJO and Jazzwise Album of the Year.

Armed with a catalogue of soul defining music, Kevin Pearce returns to the Lakeside after producing his album, For Her, at 8.30pm, 13 November. His unique voice combined with the raw passion of his composition guarantees an electrifying evening with one of Colchester’s finest.

November ends with two very different performances. Firstly, the University’s Musicians in Residence, the Angell Trio, present work by three living composers from the USA, Australia and the UK. American-born George Crumb’s powerful Sonata for Solo Cello and Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, whose music evokes the atmosphere of the outback, will be performed at 8pm, 27 November. British composer Peter Fribbins will be there in person to introduce his dramatic Piano Trio.

New musical horizons then come into view with improvisation and electronics at 8.30pm, 28 November. Sounds from the Horizon offer a concert combining extended instrumental techniques with exploration of new sounds. Andrew Allen (digital sampling and processing) and Malcolm Miles (saxophone and digital sound processing) have formed a unique partnership that explores a range of moods, shapes and textures, all of which start as acoustic saxophone sounds. Chris Burn contributes an electronic treatment of piano and trumpet.
