At her retirement presentation, the Registrar, Dr Tony Rich, paid tribute to Moira’s many achievements, including the revision of the University’s charter and statutes, her role in an essay-writing sting, and her calm, hard working, ‘firm but fair’ approach. He also praised the contribution she has made to the sector through her involvement in the Association of University Administrators (AUA). He added: ‘Thank you for the support, care and consideration you have shown for the students and colleagues with whom you have worked over three decades. You have made an enormous contribution to the University.’

Commissioner post for child law expert

Professor Carolyn Hamilton, Director of the Children’s Legal Centre, has been appointed as a Commissioner to the Legal Services Commission.

Professor Hamilton was appointed by the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw, as the Child and Family Justice expert.

An internationally recognised expert in child and family law, Professor Hamilton holds a Chair in Law at the University and is also the Senior Legal Adviser to 11 Million (Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England and Wales).

Professor Hamilton said: ‘This is an opportunity for me to contribute to the very important work of the Commission, particularly in the field of child and family law, and to be able to represent the views of family and child lawyers and the voluntary sector.’

Zoological award

Sociologist Professor Ted Benton has won a prestigious award from the Zoological Society of London.

Professor Benton will receive the Stamford Raffles award, for distinguished contributions to zoology by amateurs, or professional zoologists working outside their main area of specialism. He is recognised for his work on bumblebees and other insects.

A keen naturalist, Professor Benton has authored a number of books on bumblebees, butterflies and, most recently, dragonflies.
