Dr Steffen BöhmDr Steffen Böhm has become the University’s first departmental Environmental Officer, at the School of Accounting, Finance and Management (AFM).

Dr Böhm said: 'I'm delighted that AFM has decided to create this new post. For me, it is a sign of the School’s recognition of the importance of environmental issues, and the immense challenges we all face in reducing the environmental impact of what we do at the University.'

Dr Böhm has a long experience of research, teaching and campaigning on environmental issues. He's currently the Coordinator of the Bicycle User Group (BUG) at Essex and involved with Colchester Friends of the Earth as well as other environmental movements. He will begin by conducting an environmental audit of the School.

He added: 'We need a step change in terms of staff and students being aware of the environmental impact of higher education and in terms of actually taking action. I look forward to working with my AFM colleagues and our students to raise their environmental consciousness and come up with practical ways to reducing our impact on the environment.'

He urged: 'But we can’t obviously achieve this alone. Everybody at Essex needs to work together; Departments, Estates, the Student Union and all other groups need to come together to make a positive contribution.'

Play premiere

This month sees the world premiere of a new play from award-wining playwright Elizabeth Kuti of the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies.

Set in a small town in the south east of England, The Six-Daies World, focuses on Eddie who returns home for a peaceful family Christmas for the first time in many years. However, the recriminations of his parents and girlfriend on his failings as a son and as a man force dormant conflicts to the surface and raise the ghosts of Christmases past.

Written and developed as part of an attachment at the National Theatre Studio, the play opens in London's Finborough Theatre on Wednesday 28 November and runs until 22 December. For information on tickets please see: www.finboroughtheatre.co.uk.
