New steer for local artist
A major new exhibition of paintings and linocuts by local artist James
Dodds will soon be on display at the University Gallery, and there are
some surprises in store as James ventures into a new direction.
To celebrate being awarded an honorary degree by the University James
is launching his works in his home county, before a show at the
prestigious Messum’s gallery in London this autumn.
’The University honour feels like a wonderful acknowledgement and pat
on the back from the university community that I now also feel a part of,’
he says.
Called Fore and Aft, the exhibition, which runs from 7 to 21
July, follows on the themes from his highly successful Shipshape
tour, which travelled the country for four years, finishing at the
National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Inside Stern
Well known for his dramatic portrayal of boats, James has
branched into stone carving and works depicting relief scuplutre of boats
will be launched at his exhibition.
James is dedicating his exhibition to Professor Thomas Puttfarken of
the Department of Art History and Theory, who died last year. James said:
'He was a great supporter of the arts, building a bridge between the local
artistic communities and the University.'
