Arts
Gallery shows inspired by students
Three exciting exhibitions exploring graffiti,
architecture and visual poetry will open at the University Gallery in the
summer term.
All three exhibitions have been curated by postgraduate students from
the Department of Art History and Theory as part of their work towards the
MA in Gallery Studies.
The first exhibition, which opens on 20 April, will explore graffiti
culture in New York from the mid-1970s and its impact on youth culture in
the UK. The exhibition, entitled Off the Wall, will include a
graffiti competition.

Graffiti by Crack15, in Madrid, 2005.

De Sign, which opens on 18 May, will exhibit works by seven
artists who explore the complex infrastructure of our built environment.
The exhibition will deconstruct the way architectural language shapes our
perception and interaction with space.
The last of the three shows, E-motive: Visual Poetry in the Digital
Age, will present a variety of computer-generated visual poetry works.
Visual poetry is a medium of poetry where both language and visual
elements are juxtaposed. It opens on 15 June.
Matthew Poole, Acting Director for the MA scheme, said: 'We are excited
that there are three very interesting topics being explored this year by
students; ordinarily there are only two exhibitions a year. The topicality
of the projects reflects the students’ dedication and enthusiasm towards
bringing art historical knowledge to bear on current issues in
contemporary culture.'
Further information about the three exhibitions will appear in the
summer term issues of Wyvern.
