Award for Quays
The University's newest student accommodation development
has won a prestigious architecture award.
University Quays was named joint winner, with the nearby B&Q
superstore, of the annual Colchester Architecture Awards in the new
contemporary buildings category. The awards, jointly organised by
Colchester 2020 and the Royal Institute of British Architects, attracted a
total of 40 entries from the local area.
The University Quays development, completed in October 2003 and
providing more than 700 student bedrooms, was designed to reflect the
Hythe's contribution to Colchester's riverside heritage. It is a
significant component of the regeneration of east Colchester along with
the B&Q store.
The extension to the Biological Sciences building was also short listed
in contemporary buildings category. The extension, including its roof top
climate controlled glasshouse, provides state-of-the-art, teaching and
research facilities for the Department.
Street law success
Gary Bellow of Harvard’s Clinical programme once said
'classes alone should not expect to produce wholly finished lawyers.'
Taking this principle on board, the Essex Street Law Project gives
students the chance to put what they have learnt into practice.
Essex Street Law is organised through the Law Society and Department of
Law. It aims to raise legal awareness in the community and has gone from
strength to strength in the past year.
The project which is run solely by students has this month been
explaining the concepts behind the project to a group of visiting
professors from Uzbekistan.
This year the project has 65 active volunteers and has already
benefited 240 school pupils within the last few weeks. School students are
taught a range of lessons and are given the opportunity to take part in
activities such as Mock Trials.
Claire Richards, the student who started Essex Street Law, recently
came second in the Solicitors Pro Bono Group Student Challenge 2004 and
was presented with a cheque for £250 towards the project by the
Attorney-General at a reception in the House of Lords, judges of the award
included Cherrie Booth QC.

University launches business radio
The University of Essex Southend has launched an
innovative new radio station aimed at the business community in the south
of the county.
The Hub 106.6FM, which broadcasts from Southend, is business-focussed
and creates a unique opportunity for businesses within Southend to
communicate, innovate and grow.
The station is funded by the Uni-Skills for Business project, which
offers businesses and residents free access to courses, advice and
facilities at the University of Essex Southend.
Julie Jones, Business Development Manager at the University's Southend
suite in Princess Caroline House said: ‘We wanted to establish an
information and communications network to support and enhance the ongoing
sustainability of businesses in Southend. We hope this innovative project
will also raise awareness in the business community of opportunities
available from the University of Essex Southend.’
Although only broadcasting in Southend, you can listen online through
the station’s website:
www.thehubradio.com. Listeners can use the website to post questions
for business experts, that will be answered on air and online, and to
communicate with other local businesses through discussion forums. It also
contains information about courses on offer at the University of Essex
Southend.
