El Hijo triumphs over Blue Panther

Mexican wrestlers El Hijo del Santo and Blue Panther entertained a crowd of 400 in a heated contest at the Students' Union in October.

The match, programmed as part of the Arena Mexico Gallery exhibition, drew a large contingent of Mexican students as well as staff and members of the public. After almost 40 brave minutes Blue Panther bowed to the weight of his famed rival.

It was the second time in a week that El Hijo had proved his superiority over Blue Panther. An earlier match at Colchester Arts centre attracted a similar sized crowd and ended in the same result.

Arena Mexico, which features prints inspired by the culture of Mexican wrestling, will be at the University Gallery until 10 November.

Packed arts schedule

The Lakeside Theatre and University Gallery are offering arts enthusiasts a packed schedule in the run up to Christmas.
The Gallery's forthcoming exhibition by Birmingham-based artist Ruth Claxton looks set to get audiences thinking. I thought I was the audience and then I looked at you features excessively painted tables and mutilated domestic ornaments.

Performances at the Lakeside Theatre will be equally thought-provoking with a presentation of one of the greatest love stories ever told along with a one-woman comedy about women.

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet opens on 17 November with a cast of just three. The Shifting Sands company will tackle the pitfalls of Shakespearean English, scale the dizzy heights of adolescent passion and plummet to the depths of a lover's despair.

The tragic love story will be followed on 1 December by Honor Blackman's Wayward Women in which the famed British actress recounts the stories of some of the world's most influential women. The actress is best known for her role as a Bond girl in Goldfinger which, like the University, is currently celebrating its 40 year anniversary.
