Flamboyant Fabrics
A fascinating world of colour and poetry, in the form of works by local
artist Eliza Kentridge, has been installed recently at the University
Gallery.
The exhibition of recent works, entitled Fabrications, displays
Eliza's talent for using embroidery and appliqué to build up a world of
her own creation on cloth.
Inspired by many sources, including Ghanian Fante flags, European
samplers and the Bayeux Tapestry, these works engage the viewer with their
exploration of human relationships and domestic life.

Reinterpreted by Eliza, her many influences have evolved into a curious
world where people parade, dogs are walked, and sewing machines are
carried high in victory: a world where imagination is the key.
Eliza said: 'I use the endless possibilities of needle and thread, a
cheap, universal medium, like a stone scratching a pavement, to see what I
get when I develop certain themes and questions.'
Born and brought up in South Africa, Eliza now lives and works in
Wivenhoe. Her work retains echoes of her upbringing in Africa, while she
continues to absorb new influences from her life in Essex.
Fabrications will be at the University Gallery (Square 5) until
16 December. Admission is free. Opening times are as follows:
Monday-Saturday 11.00 to 5.00pm, Sunday 1.00-4.30pm.
