New sculpture on campus

On returning to the University this term students and staff may notice a new addition to the artistic design of the campus. A newly erected sculpture, carved out of wood, can now be seen next to the Visitor's Car Park and adds an interesting new element to the campus skyline.

The piece, entitled Angelim, is the work of Brazilian artist Elisa Bracher and was exhibited in Hanover, Germany, until last year. Donated to the University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art (UECLAA) by Sao Paulo gallerist Marilia Razuk, the sculpture was delivered to the University in December 2000. Unfortunately weather conditions last winter and spring left the ground too wet for it to be installed. The six metre high wooden sculpture was finally erected last month. Gabriela Salgado, Curator of UECLAA said, 'The sculpture's minimal beauty and organic qualities provide a new interest to the park and autumnal colour provide a rich new addition to the art on campus.'
