Working Well

Thank you to those of you who completed the first Working Well survey, which ran from 9 November until 4 December 2009. Early indications are that the overall response rate was around 46%. This will give us some meaningful data which will help us to take action to address any issues you have raised through the survey.

What is Working Well?

Working Well is a confidential staff opinion survey which gives you the opportunity to tell us what it is like working for the University of Essex, what you think is Working Well and where we need to improve. It also identifies issues that may be causing you stress. This site has been set up to keep you informed about the Survey and its progress.

Why the Working Well survey is important

The University has undergone a lot of change over the last few years and this is likely to continue. We need to make sure that we are supporting you through these changes and helping you to achieve a good quality of working life and work-life balance.

The University has some challenging strategic aims, but we know we can’t achieve them without the involvement and commitment of all our staff. A good working environment is important if you are to perform to your full potential.

The Working Well survey process

The survey is being organised by The Work Foundation (TWF). The process is outlined below:

  • Focus Groups

During September TWF ran a series of staff focus groups, on all three campuses, to gain a greater understanding of what is or is not working. This was used to inform the questionnaire design and aid interpretation of the results. The focus groups were well attended, with over 100 employees taking part.

  • Pilot

During October a small group of staff was chosen to complete the survey and test it for completion time, clarity of wording etc.

  • The Working Well Survey

The survey was launched on 9 November. Employees with logins were notified by email. Other staff received the survey as a letter. The survey is completely confidential and all completed surveys will go straight to TWF.

  • Report

TWF will give us their report towards the end of January. The work will then begin on taking action to address any issues you raise.

We will be keeping you informed of the results of the survey and actions we take. Further details of how we will be communicating the results of the survey will follow soon.

The Working Well survey will also be repeated regularly: so that we can make sure any changes we make are really making a difference and helping you and the University to work well.

If you have any questions about the Working Well survey please contact your link HR officer.
