WaLT provides a range of web development services, including web design, learning technology, technical development, web applications and server management. A range of support and training for web authors is also available. WaLT is covered by a Web and Learning Technology service commitment.

Web design and development

Services available include:

site design - including visual design, structure and navigation
site development and maintenance - site assessments, developments and major content updates
production of graphics and photographs optimised for the web

A recent design portfolio is available.

Anyone commissioning a new website, or a website redesign from us, should make use of our site briefing document in the first instance to create a profile for the work to be carried out. If you need to have any media altered such as videos or audio files by the Multimedia Services department, you will also need to fill out the Multimedia Conversion/Duplication form.

Online payment sites for conferences or products can also be set up. Inorder to do this we would need a completed conference booking form if your webshop is for a conference or a product booking form if you webshop is for an item (book, dissertation, etc). The completed form must then be returned to WaLT before we could take on the job.

Learning technology

A sub-unit of WaLT, the Learning Technology Team is responsible for learning technology support, including:

maintenance and development of e-learning infrastructure, software and systems
training and support for academic staff in the use of learning technologies
promotion and dissemination of good practice in the use of learning technology

Technical development and server management

WaLT is responsible for the technical management of the University's web services, including:

web servers - the computers that host University websites
proxy servers - enabling off-campus access to Essex-only websites
technical development of database-driven websites, providing web interfaces for administrative systems and other online services

Web and Learning Technology service commitment

The Web and Learning Technology service commitment (a Word document) describes the services provided by WaLT, and the targets we aim to achieve. Along with the other ISS service commitments, they are monitored by the Computing Service Management Group and the Administrative Information Systems Group, and reviewed and changed from time to time. The service commitments are not user guides, but more akin to contracts.
