Graphics in SharePoint Designer and FrontPage: other image improvements

You can do more with images in SharePoint Designer and FrontPage than merely resizing and cropping them.

When you select an image in your web page with FrontPage, a new toolbar appears, either at the foot of the window or as a floating toolbar; in SharePoint Designer you have to go to the View menu and click on Toolbars, then select Pictures.

If you let the pointer linger over the buttons on this toolbar, pop-up captions tell you what each button does.

Image improvementsthe restore button

Remember: you can use the Undo button to undo your changes, so do try the buttons out to see what they do; just make sure you don't save unwanted changes. An alternative to the undo button is the Restore button on the images toolbar which allows you to restore the image to its previously saved version.

Some of the tools you might try include:

brightness control Contrast and brightness. It's easy to give a dull, flat image a boost by increasing brightness and contrast.

the set transparency button If your image is a GIF file, you can use the transparency tool to select a colour that will appear transparent on the web page, allowing any background colour or pattern to show through.
set black and white picture option Try making your image into a black and white image, or use the washout effect.
the bevel button The bevel effect gives a picture 3D edges, so that it looks raised.

When you have carried out any of these changes, next time you save the page you will be asked if you want to save the amended version of the image - click OK if you are happy with the changes you've made.

Even when you have undone these changes, FrontPage may ask you if you want to re-save the image. If this happens, you can click on the Set Action button and ask FrontPage to make the page refer to the existing copy of the image.

A word of caution: don't get carried away with the changes you can make to your images. If you like an effect, use it consistently and in moderation - for example, if you bevel the edges of one picture, do the same for the others; try not to use a bit of everything.
