The services and administration comments form

The University of Essex welcomes comments from users of its services and an online form has been provided to facilitate the submission of comments and suggestions. This page explains how the form works and how web authors and other members of staff can make effective use of it.

Who the form sends to

The comments from the form will be sent by e-mail to a mailing list in the relevant part of the University, the address depending on options selected by the user. Comments on computing facilities, for example, will be sent to a group of senior managers within Information Systems Services.

On and off-campus access to the form

Access to the form is limited to University of Essex users. Anyone trying to access the form from off-campus will be prompted for a University username and password.

How to link to the form

screenshot of the formMethod 1: Simple links

A straightforward link to the form should point to: http://www.essex.ac.uk/services/comments.aspx

Method 2: Tracking links

The form includes an option to track how users have found the form.

Example 1
The link at the top of this page includes a 'query string' which tells the form that a user has followed a link from the WAG site. The resulting e-mail containing the user's comments will also include the text: "additional identifier: link from WAG site". To achieve this, the link takes the form:
http://www.essex.ac.uk/services/comments.aspx?source=link+from+WAG+site

Example 2
The above technique can also be used in e-mail. For instance, an e-mail could be sent to all students asking for comments on computing facilities. The e-mail would ask them to use the form at:
http://www.essex.ac.uk/services/comments.aspx?source=April2008+IT+survey

The resulting e-mail would then include the text: "additional identifier: April2008 IT survey", making it possible to separate all the direct responses to the e-mail from any other users of the comments form.
