University logos on the web
The University of Essex logo consists of two elements:
- A sequence of five coloured squares, representing the five squares of the
University campus. The logo is normally printed in the top left-hand corner
of paper-based publications so that the pattern of squares produces a
three-dimensional 'E'; to achieve a similar effect, the logo should sit flush top-left on University web pages.
- The words 'University of Essex'.
These elements should always be used as a single unit and should not be
modified in any way.
The logos should always be set against a white background.
Note: see also the
University's brand on the web.
The logos
The University logo has been placed in the /images
subdirectory of the main University web server; if your pages are on the second
server, you should use the logo in http://www2.essex.ac.uk/images. The URLs for these images are http://www.essex.ac.uk/images/home/header.gif and http://www2.essex.ac.uk/images/header.gif. You
should link directly to these images, rather than keep your own copies. There
are good reasons for this:
- Efficient browsing: if someone is looking around the University website
their browser will only need to fetch each logo file once; if everyone uses
their own version of the logo, web browsers have to load the image afresh on
every page that uses another copy.
- By linking to a central copy of the logo you know you are using a high
quality image that conforms to University policies on visual identity; any
minor changes to the logo will be immediately reflected on your pages
without any extra work on your part.
- Why clutter up your web directories when the files are already available
centrally?
