Guidance Notes for Applicants
These guidance notes are intended to help you when making your application
and to provide you with information about the selection process.
Setting up an account
If you have not registered online with us before, click ‘apply now’ and you
will be asked to provide some basic information to create a personal 'account'.
If you have applied online before, or have created an account online through
registering for email alerts, you can simply enter your email address and
password to log-in. Any general information you have previously supplied (such
as your address or equality monitoring information) will be held for you to
re-use in subsequent applications. You can update your details at any time
should you wish to. If you forget your password at any time, you can simply
request a reminder by using the log-in/update button at the top of each page.
Once you have created your account, you can then apply for jobs - you can
complete your application in stages, saving your details as you go along, if you
prefer. Once you have logged in via the log-in/update button you will be able to
view any email correspondence we have sent you via the ‘your emails’ link.
Searching for jobs
To search for current vacancies, use the 'search and apply' function on the
main job vacancies page. By using the drop down menus you can search for jobs in
the following ways:
By location, to see jobs at all of our campuses; By job category, to view
jobs in a particular specialism; By free text search, to search for key words in
the vacancy description; By reference number, type this specific number in to
the Reference text box and you will be taken to that vacancy; Alternatively,
choose "show all" in the job category box and "show all" in the location box to
see all current job vacancies.
Job vacancy e-mail alerts
If you wish to be notified of future vacancies that match your search
criteria you must set up an e-mail alert. Click ‘search and apply’ on the main
job vacancies page and then enter your e-mail address at the bottom of the
‘search results page’.
E-mailing a friend allows you to send the job description to a friend,
colleague or anyone else you think may be interested in the role. When the user
reads the e-mail, the link to the specific job will be displayed so that they
can apply immediately. You will also be able to add a personal message.
General guidance on making your application
All job applications must be made via the website unless otherwise stated. We
do not accept speculative postal, faxed or emailed CVs. Before submitting your
application, please make sure that you have read the Recruitment Pack carefully.
Your application will be assessed according to how closely you meet the
knowledge, skills and attributes required. It is important that you demonstrate,
by giving examples, how you meet the essential, and where possible, the
desirable criteria. Applications will be considered by a selection panel of at
least 2 people and a shortlist will be drawn up on the basis of the experience,
skills and attributes required to undertake the duties for the post. When making
your application, there are some details you must provide. These mandatory
fields are marked with a red star. For some posts, references may be taken up
prior to interview. If you do not wish us to contact your referees at this
stage, please indicate this in your application. You are required to provide us
with the names and contact details of two referees who can provide information
regarding your suitability for the post, one of which should be your current or
most recent employer. Students should give the name of a
lecturer/tutor/supervisor as appropriate. Once you have completed all sections
of the application form, and attached any requested documents, a ‘submit here'
link will appear allowing you to send your application to us. You will receive
an acknowledgement by email. You can print out a summary sheet showing the
information you have submitted. If your application has been unsuccessful, you
will be notified via email after the closing date. This could take a couple of
weeks, depending on how long it takes for the selection panel/committee to
shortlist. If you have been unsuccessful at interview stage you may request
feedback by emailing recruit@essex.ac.uk.
Candidates should note that feedback may take a couple of weeks.
Information for disabled applicants
If you have a disability which makes it difficult for you to apply on-line
please contact recruit@essex.ac.uk or
telephone the Recruitment Team on 01206-874588/875321. Under the Two Ticks
accreditation, the University will guarantee an interview to candidates with a
disability who demonstrate that they meet the essential criteria for the post.
You will be asked if you have a disability as defined by the Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA) when making your application. Further information is
available here.
As part of the application process you will be asked if you have a disability or
require any adjustments to the interview process. Any specific requests will be
discussed with you prior to interview to ensure your needs can be met.
Attending an interview
The shortlisting decision will have been based solely on the information you
have provided in your application. Even if you are already known to the
University as a current or previous employee you must ensure that you have
provided sufficient evidence of how you meet the job criteria. If you are
shortlisted we will contact you via email to invite you to attend an interview.
If you have provided a mobile phone number you will also be notified of
interview via text message. If communication by email is not possible, please
let us know. We will try, wherever possible, to give you one week’s notice of
the interview date and time. Whilst we will try to be as flexible as possible to
accommodate your needs, it will not always possible to re-arrange. You will be
interviewed by at least two people. If you are required to give a presentation
or undertake a test or task as part of the selection process you will be given
full details when you are invited for interview. You will be able to view any
email correspondence that we have sent you regarding your application and
interview arrangements via the ‘your emails’ link. We will let you know whether
you are successful or unsuccessful at each stage of the process.
When making your application, you will be asked to provide confidential
information for legal or monitoring purposes covering the following:
- Equality Act 2010
- Data Protection
- Immigration Asylum and Nationality Act 2006
