Diversity
The University of Essex is a diverse, international and multicultural
community and is proud of its record in the area of equality and diversity. The
University’s staff are from many backgrounds and nationalities, over 35% of our
student body are from outside of the UK, and there are over 125 countries
represented on campus. We aim to continue to attract staff and students from
many backgrounds and racial groups, and to carry on improving facilities at the
University in order to maintain our position as a University of choice.
The University is proud to have received the 'Two Ticks - positive about
disbled people' accreditation and have agreed to take action to meet five
commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development
of disabled employees. Our first commitment is to guarantee an interview to all
applicants who have a disability who meet the essential requirements as outlined
in the Person Specification for the job.
We continue to make improvements in all strands of equality and recently
recorded our highest ever percentage of female professors significantly above
the national average.
The facilities for religious observation include a Multi Faith Centre and
several student religious and cultural societies.
We continue to improve access on campus and there is an ongoing programme of
improvements to provision and support for the disabled both students and staff.
We welcome disabled staff, students and visitors to our campuses. Information
related to access, including detailed advice for current and prospective staff
and students, can be found on the
Access@Essex web site. For a guide to the accessibility of various
locations at each of our three campuses please visit
DisabledGo, one of the largest disability
organisations in Europe, with whom we are working to continually improve our
access-related information.
