This work is on display at Tate Modern, London
as part of the room 'Subversive
Objects' until June 2005.
Jorge Macchi is a contemporary artist who, since 1996, has taken
several residencies in Europe, and had a one-man exhibition 'Incidental
Music' at the University of Essex (University Gallery, 1998).
Macchi works with everyday, ready-made and ephemeral objects in
a variety of media including installations, video, painting collage
and photography. His work explores ideas of fate, chance and violence.
This untitled piece comprises a domestic pillow covered in a paisley
pillowcase that has been wrapped in a shattered sheet of glass.
As in other works Macchi has carefully controlled the shattering
process so that the fractures coincide with the pillowcase's design.
Such contrived coincidences and the combination of diverse materials
are common features of Macchi's work.
