The University's car sharing scheme

Share your car - share the cost!

The University of Essex has its own online car share scheme and all Colchester and Southend-based students and staff who use cars to get to campus are encouraged to register.

Save up to £1,000 a year!

Car sharing can save you money and save wear and tear to your car. Even if you don't car share every day, just two or three times a week could make a big difference. For example, if you share a ten-mile return journey with one other person, taking into account fuel and parking charges, you could save around £4 per day - that's almost £90 per month if you travel in every day - or £1,000 per year!

How it works

At present, only 200 staff and students at the University are signed-up and using the scheme - so there's tons of potential for more people to join and car share. The more of us who join, the more options there are to share journeys.

Join now

You can join the scheme by registering here. Its quick and easy to join! Just add your details and as a security measure you must use your @essex.ac.uk e-mail address so that everyone can be assured that you're a member of the University community. You can choose how people contact you and your information is not passed on to any third party.

Who's in?

Out of the 208 people that have already joined up to the car share scheme:

  • 55 per cent would otherwise drive in on their own
  • 76 per cent of members drive in daily and want to share!
  • 51 per cent are both seeking and offering lifts
  • People share every day - even weekends!

If you have any questions about the car sharing database, please contact Charlotte Humphries, the University's transport policy co-ordinator T: 01206 874597 E:cahum.
