Kevin Boyle specialises in
International Human Rights Law. He was Director of the University’s
Human Rights Centre from 1990 to 2001 and from 2006 -2007. In 2001-2002
he spent a year in Geneva with the United Nations as Senior Adviser to
Mary Robinson the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Before taking
up a full time position at Essex University in 1989 he was founding
Director of the NGO Article 19 the Global Campaign against Censorship.
He was Dean of the Faculty of Law in the National University of Ireland
Galway 1978-86 and began his career at the Law Faculty Queens University
of Belfast (1966- 1977). His interest and commitment to human rights
developed from his experience of living in Northern Ireland during the
early years of the conflict there. He has written extensively on
peaceful resolution of the Northern Ireland conflict.
He is a barrister at law and an associate tenant of Doughty Street
Chambers. He has extensive experience of litigation before the European
Court of Human Rights representing clients from a number of countries
and including a decade long project in challenging gross violation of
human rights in South East Turkey. He is Chair of the International
Council of Minority Rights Group.
