Jackie started at Essex University as an undergraduate in 1992 after a career in the health service. She has worked as an associate lecturer for the Open University in the Faculty of Health and Social Welfare and been teaching sociology and criminology since 1996. Jackie is an experienced qualitative researcher and has completed projects for both the Home Office and Department of Health.

One of Jackie's main interests concerns children's rights and currently she is discussing projects concerning trafficked children and on-line paedophilia.Her research activities include, social and health needs of marginalised groups, refugees and asylum seekers, an analysis of the provision of interpretation and translation services, child protection, drug misuse and women as offenders. During 2004-5 she undertook a research project for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health investigating complaints made against paediatricians undertaking child protection work.

Her most recent publications include: 'Understanding Child Protection Complaints' with Linda Haines (forthcoming); 'An Investigation into the Nature and Impact of Complaints made against Paediatricians' with Linda Haines (2007); 'Interpretation and Translation Services across the Public Sector' with Fernando De Maio & Pauline Lane (2003). Her book, 'Child Abuse, Gender and Society' was published by Routledge in January 2008.
