Francoise Hampson studied law as an undergraduate at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. She then taught at the University of Dundee, Scotland, for eight years before taking up a post at the University of Essex in 1983. From 1998-2007, she was a member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. In 2009, she was a member of the EU Panel which produced a report on Sri Lanka’s implementation of certain human rights obligations in the context of GSP+.

She was a member of the Steering Committee and Group of Experts for the Study on Customary International Humanitarian Law of the ICRC and has acted as an independent expert/consultant for the ICRC and other organisations in the field of the law of armed conflict.
