Ways to give

Want to help Essex but don't know what your options are? We're here to help you make the right decision and understand just how far your gift will go. Here's how to get involved.

  1. Get in touch by phone, email or post.
  2. We help you find the cause that most interests you.
  3. We find the right type of giving for you, whether a regular donation, a mentoring opportunity or an in-kind gift.
  4. We explore the tax efficient giving options available to you, as Essex is an exempt charity.
  5. 100% of your donation goes to the cause you choose. You could change a life by supporting a scholarship or bursary. You could change the world by supporting our pioneering research which is tackling problems on a global scale.

Please let us know where you would like your support to be directed when donating.

You can make your gift go further if you're eligible for Gift Aid. With Gift Aid, the Government boosts your gift by 25% at no cost to you. For every £1 you donate, the Government will add 25p in reclaimed tax, so a £100 gift is worth £125 to us.

In order for gifts to be eligible for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer who will have paid an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the University will reclaim on your gifts in the tax year in which they're made.

Please get in touch for a Gift Aid form and enclose this with your donation.

  • Give from your pay

    Donate your pennies

Donate your pennies is a brand new way for everyone at Essex to get involved in fundraising. Your net monthly pay is rounded down to the nearest pound, with the pennies going towards our scholarship initiatives, which supports talented students from across the world to study at Essex. As your maximum donation can be no more than 99p per month, our 3,000 staff at Essex can together make a big difference to our students.

    Payroll giving

You can agree to donate a set amount from your monthly pay via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). The donation comes out pre-tax, so is a really efficient way to donate. All you have to do is fill the form below:

    • CAF give as you earn

Once you've completed the form, send it to the Payroll department, Human Resources and your donation will be automatically deducted from the following months pay.

  • Leave a gift in your will

Remembering Essex in your will is a straightforward process. Any gift simply needs to be included in your will or attached to an existing will as a codicil. You can leave money or assets like books, property, shares or works of art to the University – or even a proportion of your estate.

The University is an exempt charity, which means leaving us a gift in your will is entirely free of tax, including Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. Also, if you decide to leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, there will be less tax to pay on any non-charitable bequests.

    Donate shares

Shares donated to the University of Essex are free of Capital Gains Tax and their market value can be offset against your income tax liability. Tax on any associated costs (such as brokers' fees) can also be claimed back. Every £1,000 gift of shares donated to the University of Essex will reduce your effective taxable income for that year by £1,000.

We can help you complete a stock transfer to the University of Essex. Contact us if you need help with this.
