A message from the Vice-Chancellor
Universities play an important role in society. They train minds, develop
potential and seek solutions for many of the challenges facing the world
today.
The
University of Essex has campuses in Colchester, Southend and Loughton and is
one of the leading institutions in the UK, highly-rated for the quality of
its teaching and research. Over 50,000 students have graduated since the
University first opened its doors in 1964. Our alumni work in every
profession, shaping the world with the skills and knowledge they have
gained. Our academics are some of the finest in the country, making
important contributions in fields as diverse as health and human sciences,
engineering, the environment and the arts.
The enthusiastic support of our alumni, friends and community has made an
important contribution to the success the University enjoys today. Indeed,
in 1963, a year before the University was founded, a £1 million public
appeal fund was established to help raise money for the development and
construction of the Colchester Campus. It is a testament to the commitment
and faith of our supporters that the appeal exceeded its target within
months.
The support and participation of others has been ever present throughout
our short history, and for this we remain extremely grateful. The generosity
of our friends has provided scholarships, funded research and improved
facilities across our campuses.
The way in which higher education is funded has changed enormously in
recent years and now, more than ever, we look towards philanthropic support.
Since my appointment as Vice-Chancellor in 2007, I have made a commitment to
growing the University by building on our strengths and reputation for
excellence. I ask that you allow us the opportunity of telling you more of
our achievements and aspirations. I have no doubt that you will become
convinced of our worth and will recognise that an investment in the
University of Essex is an investment in the future.
