Health, safety and wellbeing

The University is committed to providing a safe, healthy and supportive work environment for all. The University's Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy sets out the responsibilities we all have to look after ourselves and others who may be affected by what we do.

Students should:

  • look after their own health and safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions while on the University's campuses or carrying out activities under the University's supervision;
  • follow the University's and their department's health and safety policies and standards, and any instructions given to them by a member of staff for their health and safety;
  • report any health and safety incidents or concerns related to academic or University premises (including accidents, ill-health, premises hazards) in accordance with their departmental and University procedures;
  • take part in any health and safety training which the University, their department or their academic supervisor believes is necessary; and
  • not intentionally interfere with or misuse anything provided for fire or health and safety protection.

Note: under the policy, students working for the University either on an employment contract (such as Graduate Teaching Assistants) or as part of training for employment (Frontrunners, for example) are treated as employees.

Help with health and safety

  • If you have questions or concerns about health and safety relating to your studies, first speak to your academic supervisor.
  • Each department has a Health and Safety Liaison Officer (HSLO) or Departmental Health and Safety Officer (DHSO). Find out who to contact in your area.
  • Find out more about health and safety at the University.

Electrical safety

The University has strict rules on the use of certain electrical items. This is necessary to protect staff and students from the risk of fire and electric shock. Please take time to read our electrical safety guidance. As well as protecting you from harm, it will help to ensure you do not have the unnecessary expense of having to replace unsuitable equipment.
