Can all students participate?
If you are currently studying at Essex or are considering taking a degree
course with us, there are many opportunities for you to spend a term or a
full year studying in another country.
A period of study abroad can be built into most degree courses. We also
offer degree courses that have a compulsory period of study abroad.
Undergraduates can study abroad for a term or a full year in the second year
on three-year degree courses, or for a term in the third year of three-year
courses, or for the entire third year on four-year courses. Depending upon
which department you are in, some or all of these options will be available
to you.
Students found guilty of Academic Offences or Disciplinary Offences will
not be eligible to participate. An average first-year mark of at least 53 is
normally required.
The marks you obtain abroad will contribute towards your final degree
result.

Postgraduate research students are also eligible to
participate, though not in the full range of countries. Research students
can spend a term or year abroad at a partner university receiving
supervision, using archives or library holdings, or carrying out lab work.
Where relevant, students can also take postgraduate courses or undertake
fieldwork.
Many, though not all, of the funding sources listed on
our scholarships page are available to postgraduates.
Not all of our exchange partner universities will
accept postgraduate students, but many will. In general, European
universities will accept postgraduates, but in other regions, some of our
partners will and some won't. In some cases it depends upon the
subject area. Please ask us for details.
Please note that the minimum duration of a study abroad
period is three months/one term. If you are planning a shorter stay,
that would not normally be administered by the Study Abroad Office.

Masters students are able to study abroad but only in
Europe and only during the long vacation.
