supportive and academically challenging environment for your studies.
Study abroad is extremely worthwhile and enjoyable both socially and
educationally. As well as experiencing life in another country, your study
abroad experience can help you in your future career, showing that you are
naturally outgoing and adventurous, open to new ideas and methods of
working. More and more students are enjoying spending a period of study in
another country as part of their studies.
Tell me more about study abroad at Essex
We have been admitting study abroad students since 1979. Originally, our
programme was for Junior Year Abroad and exchange students from the United
States but it has extended to include Japan, Latin America, Asia, Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Approximately 250-300 students take part
at Essex each year.
Many of our study abroad students are in the second and third years of
their degrees, although some are in their fourth year and others are
postgraduates. You register with us as an ‘occasional’ - or non-graduating -
student. The modules that you can enrol for, subject in some cases to
meeting pre-requisites, can be found in our
module directory is online.
What if I return to Essex for further study?
We offer our former study abroad students a ten per discount on their
first year of tuition fee for postgraduate study. You must be registered for
your first postgraduate study period at Essex, following completion of your
study abroad programme, whether it is a taught course or a research degree.
Our loyalty discount is only available for the first year of your study and
if you are wholly self funding your tuition fee.
Students from universities within the European Union
