Our teaching and research
From exposing UK-based financial fraudsters to securing
solutions for refugees in Colombia, the impact of our
research is felt across the globe. Research is what drives us. It's what binds us
together and from day one,
you’re a part of that.
Our flexible course structures allow
you to tailor your degree around your own interests,
developing specialism in your own area. You also have
the opportunity to contribute to current Essex research
and make positive changes to the world around you.
Don't change the channel, change the news.
What makes Essex research special?
Collaboration on campus
Just like the best ideas, our departments don’t exist
in isolation. Our campuses were designed to break
down traditional barriers – a walk down one of our
corridors can take you on an intellectual journey via
Maths, Language and Linguistics, and Sociology.
There are no elitist hierarchies or curtained-off
lounges at Essex. Our students and staff work and
socialise together in a tight-knit environment that
fosters formidable partnerships. We bring together
the very best minds from across the globe, and you’ll
be exposed to a wide array of different perspectives
and opinions, which means that we won’t always
agree – but that’s how great ideas are born.
Our provocative THINK! lecture series takes the
debate even further. Hear from voices outside
of traditional academia such as sex workers,
MPs, campaigners, convicted criminals, directors,
scientists and soldiers.
Connecting the very best minds from across the
University and beyond makes Essex a force to be
How we teach you
Each subject at Essex combines different methods of teaching to ensure you
gain in-depth knowledge in addition to developing the transferable skills that
are sought by employers. Expect a mixture of lectures, classes, seminars, laboratory practicals, fields trips and independent research depending on your course. You also have the opportunity to attend
symposia, conferences, and become a member of relevant student societies and
Mentoring and other forms of peer support also play an important
role in how you learn and how we teach at Essex. Our Talent Development Centre
can help you identify your talents and strengthen those areas you need to develop.
