Why we're great

Our students share their stories and what makes them uniquely Essex.

From the student rebellions of the 60s to our contemporary ground-breaking research, we have never accepted the status quo or been afraid to speak out. We are always thinking of new and better ways of doing things. Our schools and departments are leaders in world-class research that changes lives.

Essex Spirit

We are a home for the talented and the tenacious, the brave and the bold, and those who are impatient for change. Challenging convention is in our DNA. You’ll be exposed to a wide array of different perspectives and opinions, like those in our provocative THINK! lecture series, which means that we won’t always agree – but that’s how great ideas are born.

Only by encouraging you to ask difficult questions can we break intellectual boundaries. At Essex we extend the frontiers of knowledge and pioneer solutions to issues of global concern. We give you genuine licence to shape what goes on around you and take intellectual risks so that as well as learning 'how', you challenge 'why'.

Headshot "At Essex we encourage our students to aspire to be anyone’s equal but no one’s superior – to be confident but not arrogant, brilliant but humble. If you want more from your university education than just a good degree, if you want to be enlightened and make a difference, Essex is the place to come."

Our global community

Essex introduces you to people from every corner of the planet - we're the 18th most international university in the world and 2nd in the UK (THE 2016-17). We are a genuinely global community that lives, works, and plays together. You study an internationally relevant curriculum, are encouraged to live and study abroad for a period of your course, become part of our diverse community, and are taught by academics whose research has global impact. We give you the best chance to compete in a global economy.

Making the most of Essex

Our awesome Students' Union staff team have got a message for you…

The concept of membership is enshrined in our constitution and is a cornerstone of your student experience. Like no other community you’ve been part of before, your time at Essex provides endless opportunities to make a difference to your own academic and social life, and to those around you.

The Essex community is full of opportunities to meet new people, try new things and get new skills. And it couldn’t be easier to join in with social life on our campuses. From karaoke in the SU Bar to afternoon tea at Wivenhoe House (home to our Edge Hotel School). From taking in a play at our Lakeside or Clifftown theatres to bagging a bargain at our farmers’ market – with so much going on it's impossible to get bored.

  • Facilities, services and support

    Campus facilities

From communal study areas dotted around our campuses to a brand new student centre and library extension. From cosy Students' Union social spaces to our zero carbon business school. Our campuses facilities are designed to give you the freedom to combine your interests and to meet new people from across different departments. Whatever your subject, and whatever your passion, we’ve got the space to make it happen.

    Wellbeing and support

We have Student Services Hubs at all three campuses. They provide you with one place to go for practical advice, a confidential conversation, or general information and guidance on University life.

Essex celebrates diversity and challenges inequality. We work hard to create a living, learning, and working environment that enables you to bring your whole self to University. So, whatever your age, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation; whether you have a disability or not; whether you follow a religion or not; you can be yourself here, and expect to be treated with dignity and respect.

  • Sport, clubs and societies

    Sport

Break a sweat, pump some iron. We know that exercise improves your wellbeing, can keep you calm during those stressful exam periods, and can help you do better in your studies. So at Essex, we make sure that you can access a whole range of sports.

We have more than 45 Essex Blades sport teams offering you the chance to join an active and competitive community, playing in local and national fixtures.

  • Become a member of staff

Essex gives you the chance to become a valued member of staff as well as a student. There are numerous opportunities for you to get paid or voluntary work across our campuses and gain valuable experience, such as our in Student Ambassadors scheme. This is as good for us as it is for you: we get to benefit from your vibrancy, your ideas and your experience.

Another example is our award-winning placement scheme, Frontrunners. This gives you the opportunity to undertake challenging employment around campus in departments to develop the higher-level skills you need to compete for the best jobs once you graduate.

We’ll help you get unbeatable skills and experience for your CV by volunteering in the local community or by helping raise money for some brilliant charities.
