Language portfolio
Tailor-made, guided web-based language learning at home, on campus or
anywhere where there's an internet connection.
Language portfolio is designed to allow you to study
a language flexibly along your main course. You can work
on the exercises at your own pace and within your own
timetable. Language Portfolio takes into account
different learning paces. If you prefer the full
flexibility of guided online learning then Language
Portfolio is for you.
Using the well-established language learning package,
Tell Me More, you can study French, German or Spanish at
any level from complete beginners to advanced. Based on
an initial placement exercise to establish your level,
language tutors will develop a tailor-made learning
programme with you.
And
you're not on your own. Your progress will be monitored
and there is support available to you throughout the
course. In addition to the web-based learning there are
five additional activities to enhance your language
skills.
- Language Cafés - early evening
conversation classes supported by
Europhones (native-speaking Graduate
Teaching Assistants)
- Conversation classes - evening
classes run by Europhones
- Film club/events - Europhone-supported
activities around foreign language films
and live TV events
- Online advice - a web/e-mail
facility for posting questions and
obtaining answers
- Assessment - Tell Me More has built
in testing based on the Common European
Framework so you know how well you're
progressing.

Helping you choose the right option
-
How many hours a week will I be expected to study?
As a guide you should aim to study online between three to six hours per week
in order to progress to a sufficient standard, however you choose how and when
you study by the nature of online learning.
If you choose to take part in the additional activities then this will
increase the number of hours per week you study through Language Portfolio.
-
How will I be assessed?
In addition to the testing built in to Tell Me More, you will be asked to
produce a portfolio of work, for which you will get marks and feedback, and
formal recognition of this course will be written on your degree classification.
-
Will Languages for All affect the grades of my main degree
course?
No, they won't. The Languages for All modules are entirely separate from your
main studies and will not affect your final degree in any way. There will be an
entry on your degree transcript for every successfully completed language module
taken via Languages for All, but without grades.
-
When can I apply?
Applications for Languages for All open at the start of the next academic year (2013-14).
-
How much does it cost?
Every student at Essex is entitled to one fully-subsidised language learning
activity alongside their degree course. If you would like to learn more than one
language through Language Portfolio, or in subsequent years, then the cost is
£205.
