Groups and workshops

Our groups and workshops are designed to support you through the demands of academic life. Our students often say they find it beneficial to be part of a group where other people are experiencing similar difficulties. Some workshops, such as the mindfulness exam workshop, gives you practical tips and techniques.

All workshops are held at our Colchester Campus. If you'd like to book or you would like further information about any of the sessions below, or you have queries about support at Southend Campus or Loughton Campus, please contact us.

  • Counselling groups

In addition to individual counselling we have two small ongoing counselling groups facilitated by counsellors from the service. One group is for Undergraduate and Masters students and the other is for PhD students. The groups run weekly in term time on a Monday (PhD group) and Wednesday afternoon (Undergraduate/Masters group) and students may continue to attend sessions for as long as they find it helpful.

    • Dates: Ongoing
    • Time: 2.15pm to 3.45pm
    • Booking: Places are allocated following a wellbeing assessment and further meeting with the group facilitator. Contact your Student Services Hub to discuss booking a wellbeing assessment.

  • Mindfulness group

Mindfulness is: “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Full Catastrophe Living, Delta Trade Paperbacks, 1991.

If you want to learn to cope with stress and anxiety in a different way, and feel more comfortable with yourself and your feelings, then this is the course for you. On this course you will learn a variety of simple practices, from mindful movement to mindfulness meditations, which can help you learn to respond, rather than react, to stress and difficulty, enabling you to have greater freedom of choice and make profound changes in your life.

This 6-8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course was developed 35 years ago at one America’s leading hospitals for people suffering from stress and stress related problems, and is currently being introduced in the NHS, schools and the Houses of Parliament.

This is a very popular course and there are a limited amount of places available on a first-come, first-served basis. We have had fantastic feedback, so don't miss this opportunity to experience and learn Mindfulness practice.

We are running three sessions on Mindfulness for Exams, which focuses on using techniques to reduce exam stress and anxiety. There are 3 sessions available at 5.00pm - 7.00pm on the following dates:

    • Monday 8 May
    • Monday 15 May
    • Monday 22 May

Please email wellbeing@essex.ac.uk to book a place, and you do not have to attend all 3 sessions.

This is an interactive group session, but don't worry - you don't have to share details of your own experience if you would prefer not to. We have ground rules of confidentiality, respect and no pressure.

  • Dr Who? PhD workshops and groups

The Wellbeing Service run two hour workshops for PhD students at various points throughout the year. The workshops are an opportunity for PhD students from any department to meet up, talk about issues they may be experiencing related to their studies and offer peer support and feedback.

Common issues that come up are related to lack of motivation, procrastination, isolation, and juggling commitments but it is also a forum for students to talk about whatever issues they would like to. The workshops lead to formation of a group that meets regularly.

Please contact wellbeing@essex.ac.uk to find out details about the next available workshop.
