University support for undergraduates
2012-13 Undergraduate Financial Support
1. University of Essex Bursary Scheme
£1,500 per year for every year of study for students who meet the
following eligibility criteria:
- UK (home fees) students
- Household income of up to £25,000
- Meet the conditions of their offer
- Accept the University’s offer of a place firmly by the
relevant UCAS deadline
- Register for a full-time Bachelors degree at the
University of Essex with first enrolment in 2012/13
Students taking a year aboard or industrial placement will not be
eligible for a bursary during that year as no tuition fee will be
charged and other bursary support is available
Application
Students who have applied for state support through Student Finance
England and who meet all the criteria will automatically be awarded a
bursary. Payments will normally be made in two equal instalments in
February and May.
2. National Scholarship Programme (NSP)
Accommodation subsidy of £3,000 for identified University accommodation
for 200 students for the first year of study for students who meet the
following national and University eligibility criteria:
- Ordinarily resident in England
- Household income of up to £10,000
- Register for a full-time undergraduate degree at the
University of Essex with first enrolment in 2012/13
- In the first year of study at the University
- Apply to the University of Essex through UCAS by the
30th March 2012
- Apply to the University of Essex for an NSP
accommodation subsidy by the 30th March 2012
- Apply for accommodation at the University by the
published accommodation application deadline
Under the national eligibility criteria of the NSP the following students
are not eligible for the NSP regardless of meeting the above criteria:
- NHS-funded students
- students funded by the Training and Development Agency
for Schools
- students directly continuing from one course to another
(for example from foundation degree or HND on to the final
year of an honours degree)
- students transferring in from another institution
- students undertaking a postgraduate qualification
- part-time students studying at less than 25 per cent
intensity of the full-time equivalent
- any other students whose fees are paid or part-paid
through a sponsorship arrangement
Application
Students must apply directly to the University to be considered for an
NSP accommodation subsidy. Our
application form is here and
applications must be submitted by 30th March 2012. Students must also apply
for University accommodation by the published accommodation deadline in
order to be considered.
3. Academic Excellence Scholarships
£2,000 for each year you study at Essex, for students who
meet the following eligibility criteria:
- UK (home fees) students
- Achieve: AAB at A level, three distinctions in the BTEC
National Diploma; 38 points or more in the International
Baccalaureate; or Distinction in 45 credits at level three
in the Access to HE Diploma.
- Accept the University’s offer of a place firmly by the
relevant UCAS deadline
- Register for a full-time Bachelors degree at the
University of Essex with first enrolment in 2012/13
- Successful eligibility for future
years’ entitlement is determined by achieving an overall
pass rate of 60 per cent during studies at Essex.
Application
Students who meet the criteria for award of the Academic Excellence
Scholarship will be identified by the Undergraduate Admissions Office, and
will be informed in writing that they have been successful in obtaining the
scholarship. Payments will normally be made in two equal instalments in
February and May.
4. Care Leavers’ Bursaries
Bursaries of up to £1,000 are available for new and continuing
undergraduate students who were in local authority care prior to starting
their University course.

Applicants should apply using the main
Access to Learning Fund form and supply all required documentation.
5. Refugee Bursaries
Bursaries of up to £1,000 are available for undergraduate students with
refugee status, or who are dependants of refugees.

6. Mobility Bursaries
Students from low income households are eligible to apply for bursaries
of £2,000 for a full year or £1,500 for a part-year to access opportunities
for study abroad, international placement or volunteering. These bursaries
are in addition to the fee-free year for students studying abroad or
undertaking industrial placements.
Application
Students must apply directly to the University to be considered for a
Mobility Bursary. Further information on how to apply will be posted on the
University website from September 2011 and applications must be submitted by
the published deadline.
