University Bursary - For students who started their course in Sept/Oct 2008

In order to be assessed for the University Bursary, you and all of your sponsors must have agreed to share your financial information with the University.  You can check if you have done this by calling Student Loans Company on 0845 603 4016.

The University of Essex Bursary

University of Essex, along with most other universities, charges UK and EU students an annual tuition fee of £3,225* for all undergraduate degrees (excluding foundation years).

Cash maintenance bursaries are available for all UK students from low income households, who are receiving the government’s Maintenance or Special Support Grant, to ensure that no student is deterred from applying to Essex on the grounds of financial hardship:

  • For those students with residual household incomes below £34,459 pa, the University will provide a cash bursary for course-related costs to ensure that all UK students will receive maintenance support equivalent to £3,255 per year when combined with Government support.
  • For those students with residual household incomes between £34,459 and £60,032 pa, the University will provide a cash bursary for course-related costs worth up to a maximum of £1,930per year based on a sliding scale of payments.

Bursary payments are made in two equal instalments, paid in February and May.

EU students – are not eligible for government support towards living costs and are therefore not eligible for the University Bursary.

East of England Strategic Health Authority funded students – students on courses whose tuition fees are paid in full by the East of England Strategic Health Authority are not eligible for the University Bursary.

*The tuition fee and University Bursary are subject to annual inflationary increases.
