Funds and bursary schemes

In addition to ALF, the University operates a number of other bursary schemes which have been set up with donations and bequests from private individuals. You must be a fully registered University of Essex student to apply:

  • Vera Carmen Lord Fund – for UK 'home' students who have resided in (or are connected with) the Worthing area, and for any students who are nationals of, or were born in Jamaica.
  • The International Students' Fund - a small fund offering limited awards (usually £250-£500) to international students. In order to be eligible, students should normally be in their final year of study and facing exceptional and unforeseen financial difficulties. Awards are normally only made to students for whom the payment will prevent them from having to drop out of their course. (Please note: you cannot normally apply direct to this fund. Awards are made at the discretion of the Senior Welfare Adviser in liaison with the Student Funding Coordinator following interview.)
  • Postgraduate Bursary for Acting and Pre-registration (Nursing, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy) Students - a limited bursary scheme to assist first-year Acting and Pre-registration students from low income backgrounds.

Payments from these funds and bursary schemes are limited and usually quite small. There are geographical and residency status restrictions to eligibility for some schemes. For more details contact the Student Funding Co-ordinator in the Student Support Office.

The Students' Union also provide a short-term emergency loan scheme. Loans rarely exceed £50 and they require a post-dated cheque, supported by a cheque guarantee card as proof of your ability to repay. For more information contact the Students' Union Advice Centre.
