The University of Essex Sports Scholarship Scheme provides structured support to talented student athletes, enabling you to reach your full sporting and academic potential. Find out what's available and how to apply.

Our growing investment in performance sport focuses on three key areas, volleyball, basketball and rugby sevens. Former international volleyball player, Alex Porter, team manager of GB senior men’s basketball team, Mark Lloyd and Dr Ben Jones, former England rugby sevens scrum-half, have joined the team at Colchester as we target support to talented student athletes to ensure they reach their full academic and sporting potential.

Alex, a former England and Great Britain player, has also played for professional clubs in Sweden, Austria and Holland. He has coached the England South Boys, winning two gold medals and one silver medal in the UK School Games, and is currently also the Head Coach for Tendring NVL Men.

Mark was team manager for GB’s men’s wheelchair basketball team when they won a bronze at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. He has just taken our women’s team to victory in the National Cup in a tight final against Reading Rockets at the home of Basketball England in Sheffield.

Ben, who played for Northampton Saints and Worcester Warriors as well as for the England rugby sevens, is also a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the University.

They are all at the heart of this elite athlete-focussed programme working alongside the University’s strength and conditioning coach, Centre for Sports and Exercise Science, Human Performance Unit, Colchester Physiotherapy Clinic, Lifestyle Advisors and Academic Mentors.

This comprehensive package is showing early signs of success as the players have the opportunity to develop and excel at their sport while studying for a degree at a world-class university.
