Established in 2011, the new Brightlingsea Watersports & Yacht
Club (BWYC) will cater for beginners, enthusiasts and experienced sailors,
providing affordable watersports, training and waterfront facilities.
It aims to offer a range of activities including yachting,
dinghy sailing, kayaking, rowing and windsurfing. Keen to encourage newcomers to
the water, the club also plans to offer taster sessions and coaching schemes.
The club has a range of membership options suited to University students and
staff, as well as the local community.

Background
The University of Essex has owned a water sports facility at Brightlingsea
since the 1960s. Comprising a clubhouse and boatyard, they have been
underused in recent years.
In February 2011, the University agreed to the creation
of a new charitable trust,
in order to restore these facilities to benefit not only its students and
staff, but also the local community.
This trust will be responsible for the new
Brightlingsea Watersports & Yacht Club whose home will be the University’s water
sport facility on Brightlingsea waterside.
