Disc Golf

Similar to the traditional game of golf but using a disc or frisbee, the aim of Disc Golf is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws. The disc is thrown from a tee area to a target - the "hole". The Colchester Campus has both a 9-hole and 18-hole disc-golf course. Discs can be hired from the Sports Centre, along with maps and scorecards.

The 9-hole course starts & finishes at the Sports Centre and is ideal for beginners and children, or for those who want to practise or have a shorter round. The more challenging 18-hole course - one of the oldest in England - goes around the campus, through wooded areas and lakes, and regularly hosts the British Open Disc Golf Championship.

Both courses have recently been re-structured as a result of building work taking place at the Colchester campus.

For the 18-hole course:

Terrain: Undulating parkland.
Water Hazards: on 2 holes.
Targets: 18 baskets with double sets of chains.
Tees: Concrete paving slabs.
Par: 60
Record: 48 (Marco LeHouse, 24/08/97)

Review of the course

Review from OB (Disc Golf Magazine):

"One of the oldest courses, on the BDGA circuit, it has established itself as hard playing and demands every type of shot. Weenie throwers might struggle across the lake...take your chances. The course was redesigned in 2000 and has some great disc golf holes.

The university facility offers excellent hospitality - hot food and cheap beer to compliment a well designed and very playable course."
