The 2009 Sports Awards Dinner
The University held its 32nd Annual Sports Awards Dinner,
at the Weston Homes Community
Stadium on Friday 8th May, 2009.
This is a formal occasion and is one of the
highlights of the University's sporting calendar.
Members of the University’s senior management team and local dignitaries
attended, including the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, and the Mayoress of
Colchester. 212 people attended to
honour over seventy students receiving
their Sports Award Colours in recognition of three years of dedication to
University sport. Other presentations
also made were:
- The Most Promising
Newcomer award to Stephanie Riches, for performances at a
national level in the sport of Cheerleading.
- The
Simon Loveday Award, awarded jointly to Alison Curtis
and Edward Brownsey, in recognition of their overall contribution to sport.
- The Director of
Sport Award for Outstanding Performance, went to Abigail
Embling for her achievements over 3 years at national level in table tennis
(winning the BUCs singles and doubles championship in her first year).
- The Sports Federation
Presidents award, went to Steven Prest from Rugby.
- The Social Club of the
Year Award went to the trampolining club especially in
recognition of their outstanding contribution to volunteering and the
activities organised for their members.
- The Team of the Year
went to the netball first team for achieving two back to back promotions.
- The Club of the Year
went to the Hockey club in recognition of their contribution in such a
diverse range of activities including fundraising for charity, coaching in
schools and the women’s 1st X1 winning their BUC’s league and the
Mens 2nd X1 winning promotion.

The guest of honour at the dinner was
Anne Wafula Strike, a paralympian gold medallist at the 2004 Athens Games,
who will be going for gold at the London 2012 Games. Anne proved to be a truly
inspirational speaker and she was treated to a standing ovation at the end of
her speech.
