2009 Alumni Weekend
Past and present students battled it out on campus over the 2-3 May Bank Holiday
weekend for the University of Essex Alumni Weekend 2009.
|
SATURDAY
The weekend kicked off on the indoor courts, with an
exhibition game of mixed basketball, which did not count towards the overall
competition. The action then moved out into the sunshine and onto the
pitches for the American Football fixture, which saw the Alumni pulling out
a convincing 7-0 win over the students.
The Men’s Hockey 1’s made it a 2-0 lead for the Alumni with the Alumni
players edging a 1-0 win. Indoors, the squash and badminton competitions
were running, with the Alumni taking both titles.

The trampolining
bounced into action at midday, with the Alumni winning the 5th
event of the day. Victories by the Alumni in the women’s hockey and the pool
competition, extended their lead over the current students, 7-0.
The women’s football game ended in a 1-1 draw, with neither team able
to finish their opponents off and claim the win.
With some serious
catching up to do, the student’s finally got off the mark, with the Men’s
hockey 2’s taking a well deserved victory, 4-2 over the Alumni.
The men’s football 1’s followed suit and after a closely fought
competition claimed the points with a 3-2 win.
The Men’s football 2’s weren’t quite as luckily though with the
Alumni pulling out a solid performance to take the win, 5-2.

 |
The remainder of the
afternoon was dominated by the students with the Men’s rugby winning by a
try, with the final result set at 34-29.
The current students put on a fine display against the Alumni,
winning convincingly, 43-23. Women’s Rugby was also played as an exhibition
event so no points went to either side in the bid for the overall title.
The final
victory of the day went to the Alumni in the cricket competition, rounding
off a great day of sport just in time for the presentations. The overall
Foundation Cup was awarded to the Alumni with a strong overall performance
across the board, leading the student’s, 8 matches to 4.
