Strategic Projects

Purpose

The Strategic Projects Office supports the University in achieving its strategic aims of excellence in education and research by facilitating and promoting effective change and project management within the University. The team does this by:

  • supporting the development of the University’s Strategic Plan and its underpinning institutional, supporting and sub- strategies, to ensure effective co-ordination across the Plan and these strategies
  • supporting the implementation of identified projects identified by the Project Co-ordination Group and/or the University Steering Group as arising from the Strategic Plan and its underpinning strategies, and ensuring synthesis across different strands of activity
  • supporting the Project Co-ordination Group in overseeing and co-ordinating major strategic projects that are undertaken within the University
  • developing the University’s capacity for the effective management of strategic projects by ensuring that effective training, support and guidance is available for staff across the University engaged in project management and process review

Function

In support of its stated purpose, the Strategic Project Office’s activities include:

  • supporting the development of the Strategic Plan, and institutional, supporting and sub-strategies, in order to ensure alignment and co-ordination across strategies
  • providing committee support for Project Co-ordination Group (PCG) and its sub-groups (including co-ordinating regular reports to PCG on the progress of approved projects, and an overview of generic project progress and project management issues)
  • maintaining a register of approved and active strategic projects and their status
  • project-managing specific strategic projects as directed by University Steering Group and PCG
  • facilitating the University’s Project Managers Network, which provides colleagues with the opportunity to share experience and knowledge of change and project management
  • working with Learning Development to provide formal training opportunities in change and project management
  • developing and maintaining a project management toolkit (a scalable approach that can be applied to projects of different sizes and natures) that can be used across the University
  • maintaining the University's Lean Programme and leading on lean reviews in core areas that support the strategic aims
  • developing and maintaining a lean review toolkit (a scalable approach that can be applied to reviews of different sizes and natures) that can be used across the University
