Study options
We value face-to-face contact with our students when we teach and we make
sure you learn in a variety of ways, including:
- lectures and small seminar groups;
- away days;
- group work;
- presentations;
- project work (individual and group); and
- written assignments.
Teaching is usually by lectures followed by classes
or discussion groups of 10-15 students, or by small
seminars. Your learning is assessed by written
assignments.

Study abroad
We make it possible for you to undertake study abroad, either during your Essex
course or by attending Essex whilst you are studying elsewhere. You will
find study abroad extremely worthwhile and enjoyable, both socially
and educationally.
Support
Our Student Resource Centre provides an academic and personal support service specifically aimed at sociology students and those taking sociology options. It is home to an extensive range of study aids and support services and runs a programme of academic skills workshops throughout the year..
