Undergraduate study at Essex

Students working together in classWe offer a wide range of courses that cover the areas of sociology, criminology and media. Some of our courses are joint with other subjects so you can broaden your understanding in areas such as:

Study options

We value face-to-face contact with our students when we teach and we make sure you learn in a variety of ways, including:

  • lectures and small seminar groups;
  • away days;
  • group work;
  • presentations;
  • project work (individual and group); and
  • written assignments.

Teaching is usually by lectures followed by classes or discussion groups of 10-15 students, or by small seminars. Your learning is assessed by written assignments.

We make it possible for you to undertake study abroad, either during your Essex course or by attending Essex whilst you are studying elsewhere. You will find study abroad extremely worthwhile and enjoyable, both socially and educationally.

Improve your English language abilities or learn a new foreign language from scratch! As well as intensive programmes to improve your general or academic English, at Essex you can study languages outside your course in a flexible, part-time framework.

Our Student Resource Centre provides an academic and personal support service specifically aimed at sociology students and those taking sociology options. It is home to an extensive range of study aids and support services and runs a programme of academic skills workshops throughout the year..
