Rigorous research methods training
All our postgraduate courses have rigorous research methods training embedded
into the course syllabus. With rare first-hand access to key national research
data and resources in our
Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and
UK Data Archive, you can work with and analyse real data. As the UK's
leading university for social sciences, and a focal point for social and
economic research funding, you will learn from the best social researchers and
analysts in the country.
A key role in our Doctoral Training Centre
Our Department plays a key role in the Economic and Social Research Council
(ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), which offers 16
studentships worth up to £18,252 for talented Home/EU postgraduate students. A
number of our courses are accredited pathways and eligible for ESRC funding
through to doctoral research.
Our four year programme (1+3) comprises of one year's research training, at
Masters level, linked to a three year PhD for those taking:

ESRC Doctoral Training
Essex is one of just 21 ESRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centres in the UK, which
reflects our outstanding reputation for social science and means we are able
to award a number of scholarships for postgraduate study.
PG open day in March
Book a place at our postgraduate open day, on Wednesday 6 March, to find out more about
studying at a top ten UK research university. The event runs from 5pm to 7pm in The Tony Rich Teaching Centre at our Colchester Campus.
