Why study in the Department of Sociology?

Study

Study

Hear about Keeley Knowles and Amy Wheeler's experiences at Essex, what the Student Resource Centre has to offer and from some of our academics in our latest video.

Our Department is a large, friendly, international and diverse place to study. We have long been recognised as one of the outstanding departments of sociology, both nationally and internationally. We have a global reputation for our research and are one of only two out of the 60 sociology departments in the UK to achieve maximum research ratings in consecutive national evaluations.

Students who study sociology or criminology with us at Essex are at the cutting-edge of knowledge about social change in the twenty-first century. Come to Essex and benefit by learning about the latest research findings from staff who are amongst the leaders in their fields. You have the opportunity to study a wide range of areas, including:

  • advertising;
  • citizenship;
  • culture;
  • crime and deviance;
  • the environment;
  • globalisation;
  • gender and ethnic divisions;
  • health;
  • intimacies;
  • the media;
  • social movements;
  • sexualities; and
  • work.

We have experts on Europe, North America, Latin America, Japan and East Asia.
