Volunteering In The Resource Centre

Volunteers are the life force of the Resource Centre. It is their time - freely given - that enables the room to remain open and available to students for the greater part of the week. As students themselves, volunteers are valuable intermediaries between the teaching staff and the student body and, with the benefit of personal experience, their advice can often be the most useful.

What Does Volunteering Entail?

There are a number of ways in which you can volunteer:

An hour a week

Just one hour a week is all it takes! Most volunteers give one or two hours of their time each week. Any time you can offer is greatly valued, although it helps if you are able to keep to a regular slot each week, so that the room’s opening hours are as consistent as possible.

Your principal job as a volunteer is simply to keep the room open and available for others to use, for the time that you are able to give. However, you are also available to give guidance and advice to other users, both about the room’s reference facilities (how to make use of them etc.), and on other general issues as they arise. Occasionally there are also tasks to be done in the room (e.g. filing and database work). For the remainder of your time, you are welcome to bring your own work and make use of the room’s facilities whilst you’re here. All you need is a friendly face and a willingness to help out for a while.

Proof reading

The Student Resource Centre offers a free essay proofreading service, run with the help of postgraduate students, which aims to correct grammar and to advise on basic structure only; it will not alter, or offer comment on, the content of work.

The Advantages Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the life of the department and to get to know many more of the staff and students. Your familiarity with the many available reference facilities and academic support services that the department offers really can give you a head start in your own studies. Later on, when you’re seeking work, your work in the centre can contribute usefully to your CV and references.
