Seminars for 2012/13

10 November 2010: Introduction to Structural Equation Modelling (10th and 11th November 2010): UPDATED (Essex Short Courses in Social Research)

Dr Nick Allum (University of Essex), Dr Tom Scotto (University of Essex) and Ms Katy Sindall (University of Surrey) from University of Essex and University of Surrey

At 09:30 in Room 5S 4.11 and Computer Lab H at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus .

Summary: A two day practical course introducing structural equation modelling for social scientists

This two day course (10th and 11th November 2010) will provide an introduction to the structural equation modelling framework and illustrate what it can be used for by substantive analysts across the social sciences. In addition to covering the core ideas and principles of the SEM framework, course participants will be provided with hands-on experience of fitting a number of structural equation models to publicly available data. The presentation of ideas will be at the conceptual level. Formulae will be kept to a minimum. The focus of the course is on the application of structural equation models for addressing real substantive questions. Lab classes will use the software package Amos 17 and data examples will be drawn from the European Social Survey (ESS)

Course Objectives

• To provide an introduction to structural equation modelling.
• To provide hands on training in setting up, running and interpreting models using AMOS 17

Course Content

This course will include the following topics:

• Introduction to structural equation modelling
• Model fit and model modification
• Assessing and controlling model identification
• The confirmatory factor model
• The MIMIC model
• Multiple-group models
• Mediation models

Target Audience

The course is aimed at researchers, especially those in the social, economic, educational and medical sciences, PhD students, market researchers and those engaged in research in the public and third sectors who wish to familiarise themselves with structural equation modelling and how it can be used to address substantive research questions.

Commercial, local and central government organisations: £480

UK Higher Education staff or registered charities: £240

UK-registered PhD students and University of Essex staff and students: £120

There are a limited number of bursaries for Essex PhD students and Sociology staff. This covers the full cost of the course, with a refundable deposit of £50 to reserve a place.

Presenters: Dr Nick Allum, Dr Tom Scotto (University of Essex) & Ms Katy Sindall (University of Surrey)
