Rising stars at our University
Our supportive research environment nurtures talent, meaning you can
undertake groundbreaking work and rise to the top of your field.
Some of our younger staff and students who have been hitting the
headlines include:
- PhD student Mohamed Al-Mulla, School of Computer Science and
Electronic Engineering, who designed a special wireless device, iSense,
capable of predicting and detecting the status of muscles during training
and can be adapted for any sport;
- Dr Aaron Balick, Centre of Psychoanalytic Studies, who helps BBC
Radio 1 listeners by giving advice on the Radio 1 Sunday Surgery programme;
- Dr Chris Marsden, School of Law, the only academic invited to
address the European Parliament-Commission joint summit on the open internet
and net neutrality in Europe;
- PhD student Gerard Moate, Department of History, who spoke at the
Institute of Historical Research about the lost library of William Burkitt;
- Dr Dave Smith and Dr Dave Suggett, Department of Biological
Sciences, whose Coral Reef Research Unit now has a £50,000 aquarium to
address key research questions under controlled laboratory conditions; and
- Dr Ayse Uskul, Department of Psychology, whose ESRC-funded
project looks at how cultural differences in visual imagery can make a
different to attempts to change future behaviour.
