Research Impacts

This web page is currently under construction so please re-visit periodically for future updates.

UK government is placing growing emphasis on developing a strong knowledge driven economy. Funding for research is increasingly being viewed as an investment that will benefit society and the economy.  Research Councils are now seeking to maximise the impacts of their investments.  Applications for Research Council grants now require that the principal investigator develops an appropriate plan to convert research outputs into economic and social impact.

The REO is happy to discuss research outputs and their potential impact and comment on researchers draft Impact Plans.  Please contact your specified Research and Enterprise Manager in the early stages of developing your research plans.

Research Councils UK have provided three brochures that provide some case studies of Impact arising from a wide range of research projects. You can find the links to these under the 'useful external links' on this page. These may provide you with a useful source of inspiration and assist you in developing your own Impact Plan.

A new Impacts Awards scheme is in operation to recognise and reward successful knowledge transfer. Winners of this year's competition are outlined. The three award categories: Business Impact, Environmental Impact and Public Policy and Service Impact recognise and celebrate the process of transferring knowledge and expertise from the research base of higher education and the public sector for the wider benefit of society and the economy.
