David Crawford is Deputy Director of the Research and Enterprise Office and a Business Development Manager (BDM) for the Science and Engineering Faculty. David has the degrees of BA (Hons) and MSc, plus a PhD in Image Coding, all from Essex, and is a Visiting Professor for the Department of CES. David is also a Director of a small high-tech company, TeamCast of France, which manufactures digital transmission equipment. He is actively involved in various international standards bodies and industry forums, including ETSI and European Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) project work groups. During his career, he has held senior posts with several blue chip companies including British Telecom in the UK and Bell Labs in the USA, where he led a research group on HDTV transmission systems. From 2000 to 2003, David was Director of Technology at Crown Castle UK, and from 2003 to 2005, he was Managing Director of the European Broadcast Business for Harris Corporation. David continues to chair annual conferences for the IET (London) and IBC (Amsterdam).
Emma Hewett
is the BDM for Humanities and Comparative Studies. She has a BA
in Creative Arts from Bretton Hall College (University of Leeds).
After completing a Certificate in Video and Television
Production (ViewNorth), Emma began her career initially at Limehouse
Studios, then in broadcast television at Channel 4. She became an
actor’s agent with Kate Feast Management, representing amongst
others, Tony Robinson, Robson Green and Adrian Lester. She used her
PR skills in charity fundraising with Save The Children, WildInvest
and the Council of Churches, before finding a niche in university
marketing and alumni relations at SOAS (School of Oriental &
African Studies). With a second child came a move back to her home
turf of Suffolk, and the role of Editor at university consortium
i10, before becoming Business Development Manager with the
University of Essex’s spinout VentureNavigator.
Kirstie Cochrane is a BDM for the Science and Engineering Faculty specialising in the Biological Sciences.
Ville Karhusaari, the BDM for the Faculty of Law and Management, graduated from the Helsinki School of Economics with a BSc degree in International Business. After working in an accountancy role for a French hotel group in London, he joined the Periodical Publishers Association, the UK magazine industry trade body, where he ran their financial accreditation scheme for media buying advertising agencies. In 2002, Ville was accepted onto an International Sales and Marketing Management programme run by the Finnish Institute for International Trade, which included a year spent in Prague as a Market Analyst assisting Finnish exporters with market entry into the Czech and Slovak Republics. Returning to the UK in 2004, he worked for four years in the international trade advisory and consultancy field on behalf of UK Trade & Investment, International Business Wales and East of England International before joining the REO in February 2009.
Jenny Young, the Knowledge Exchange Manager, graduated from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Sociology and Social Anthropology. After leaving South Africa to travel, she settled in London where she became a contract manager for French facilities management company Elior, and then joined Business Link for London, where she managed a European funded project. Jenny left Business Link to join London Metropolitan University, as a Business Sector Leader, representing London Met on Knowledge East, the Thames Gateway Centre for Knowledge Exchange. Whilst at London Met, Jenny developed business opportunities and funding applications for Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects, other regionally funded projects supporting business interaction with the knowledge base, and proof of concept funding for academics to test the commercial potential of their research. Jenny completed her MBA whilst at London Met.
Linette Edonya, Enterprise Support Officer for the Business Development Team, graduated from Anglia Polytechnic University with a BA (hons) degree in Business and Marketing in 2005. Linette has worked in the commercial, public and third sectors including Casio Electronics, Rank International, NHS and BT and has direct enterprise experience, having run her own business. Linette attended a professional performing arts school for eight years and also has a strong creative vocational background. Linette joined the REO in February 2008 to support the enterprise programme and the business development team and has completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Management whilst being in post.
