Welcome to the Research and Enterprise Office at the University of Essex. We focus on three main areas: for the University’s research community we provide assistance with research grant applications from the initial idea through to managing the award once it is made. We help to foster mutually beneficial relationships with companies and other external organisations wanting to tap into the University’s expertise. The office also helps promote entrepreneurship and innovation among the University’s students and staff.

We help companies and external organisations to tap into university expertise. This might involve consultancy, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, research collaboration, exploiting intellectual property or support for new and small businesses.

The REO assists our researchers throughout the life cycle of research grants. We help with initial ideas, funding, research governance issues, ethics advice, grant applications and administering grants once awarded. We also co-ordinate research planning.

We encourage students to explore business ideas, develop their entrepreneurial talents, and make the most of their intellectual property. Our services range from dedicated ‘innovation’ spaces and online advice to specially tailored programmes and events.

European award for innovative internet project
A $6.7million project involving Essex academics has won the 'Future Internet Award' for its outstanding contribution to developing the internet of the future.  The project PURSUIT (Publish Subscribe Internet Technology), received the award from the Future Internet Assembly who described the project as "a leading example of European future networks research".  Dr Martin Reed from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering led the team at Essex, redesigning the current internet model to meet its constantly growing demand, allowing for quicker internet access, reducing spam and viruses, improving internet connections and making it safe for its users.  >>Read more

University's spin-out UltraSoC wins competition for funding
University of Essex spin-out company UltraSoC Technologies has won funding under the Energy Efficient Computing competition, receiving £150,000 from the Technology Strategy Board for a new project.  The collaborative project between UltraSoC and the Universit of Cambridge, called spEEDO, will conduct research to identify the potential of increasing energy efficiency in electronic systems.  The project will use UltraSoC's ground-breaking debug technology allowing detailed information about the behaviour and energy usage of these systems to be measured. >>Read more

Cost effective access to new research talent
Businesses and organisations now have the chance to access the freshest thinking for their projects, from research students at the University of Essex .  The new service can provide support for a whole range of projects, which can stem from 1-12 weeks and researchers can work up to 18 hours a week on a particular scheme. "Accessing Low Carbon Funding" Low Carbon KEEP Showcase Event - November 6th 2013
A free event is being held on November 6th, between 10am and 4pm at the Trinity Centre, Cambridge Business Park.  There will be a series of stimulating talks by various government and non-government funding providers in the region, as well as companies who have successfully accessed and utilised various types of funding.  Attendees will have the chance to explore the financial and business aspects of the various streams of funding available and listen to real world examples of how companies have used funding to increase profits, develop new products and improve competitiveness. >>Details
